Description & History
Mumbles Development Trust (MDT) is a community organisation started in 1999 as a community initiative to promote active citizenship and self help community projects as a not for profit limited liability company with educational charitable aimsthat enhance the local environment, community heritage and promote Mumbles as a South Wales tourist resort.
MDT has a membership of over 100 individuals, community organisations and local businesses who actively support and initiate MDT’s programme of activities. Over the past ten years, MDT has created and successfully raised funds to establish many projects that have made a real difference to the community.
Location and Area of Benefit
Mumbles is a traditional Victorian coastal resort in Swansea. The geographic area covered by the Trust is the same as that of Mumbles Community Council.
Main services, Enterprises and Activities
- Managing 9 woodland sites within Mumbles under a Cydcoed scheme.
- Manages the Mumbles Local Produce Market, second Saturday of each month.
- The Oriel Gaeaf /Winter Gallery is a space kindly provided by the Mumbles Development as exhibition space for local artists work. Managed and maintained by volunteers who simply love art of all genres and thrive on showing off local talent.
- Manages Mumbles Mostly Jazz and Blues Festival, first May Bank Holiday weekend.
- Publishes Mumbles Matters, a quarterly community newsletter reporting on environmental and social issues and encouraging discussion and debate about the future of the village.
- Working to establish a comprehensive development plan for Mumbles including transport, highways, parking as well as amenities and tourist developments in accordance with the wishes of the community of Mumbles.
- Supports youth projects and is concerned with improving sports facilities and the environment of Underhill Park, at the heart of Mumbles
Emerging & Proposed Future Developments
The Trust is working to establish a development plan for Mumbles including transport, highways, parking as well as amenities and tourist developments and developing measures that would help to -re-establish the oyster industry in Mumbles.
There are also plans to develop a Celtic Festival to run in synergy with the Mumbles Mostly Jazz & Blues Festival
