DBD was registered as a company limited by guarantee in February 2006 to operate as a community development trust. This initiative came out of a shared recognition that there was no community organisation working across the city and that this was resulting in a patchwork of organisations that individually lacked the resources, responsibility, capacity and beneficiaries to attract investment to address well recognised problems.
The Big Lottery funded a community consultation and the preparation of an action plan that was used to attract funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation for a community enterprise development officer to develop aspects of the action plan. DBD currently has 45 members and 11 directors including representation from the County and Community Councils, a number of community associations, the Healthy Living Centre, the Chamber of Trade, the Civic Society, the Lions Club, the local credit union, and people whose work is with the voluntary sector, youth work and addressing racial inequality.
